How to properly express my love for Fang Island without letting myself devolve in to bizarre fangirlspeak? They sound like basically a mash up of every cool Brooklyn band from the last 3 years, from the twirly-sounding electronica, the anthem-esque soaring vocals, bass, all of it. Not to mention the band is pedigreed - borne out of a 'school project' at Rhode Island School of Design - famous east coast hotbed of avant-garde ish ness. Well anyway, I've seen them live and they're great. This is a great song to ride my bike to in the fall here when the weather is really beautiful and everything becomes super synergistically awesome.

I haven't blogged worth a shit in awhile, but I've decided recently to come back. Mostly because I've seen a lot of dumb blogs get a lot of play, and I know I can kick some blogging ass. To kick things off, this magnificent music video from the band 'Holy Fuck'

Infusions: Jalepeno Infused Tequila

Now that summer's here, it's a great time to experiment with adding flavor to cocktails by creating infusions. There are many different flavors that can be combined in different ways, but the one I did this weekend is a Jalapeno-Tequila infusion inspired by the Jalapeno Lemonade at Cupcakeland.

I did this very easily using 3 medium sized Jalapenos, diced, and a litre of really cheap tequila.

The first step, is to drink or otherwise disappear about an ounce of Tequila or whatever liquor you are using, to make space for the Jalapeno.

Hard, I know.

You may not want to use 3 Jalapenos, but it depends on how much pain you want. I determined after rigorous focus-grouping (ambushing my roommates with Jalapeno-Tequila Lemonade this morning) that 3 Jalapenos was taking it a bit far. There's always next time. I guess.

Then you dice the peppers up and stuff them into the tequila bottle.

That has to sit at the very least overnight. Other infusions such as citrus or coffee infusions take a bit longer, but we tasted a bit this morning and decided that it was ready.

Put it in a cool dark place where your roommates won't drink it and just let it sit there overnight.

So now you need a strainer and another container to catch the strained tequila in. ALSO; be very careful with your hands while you do this, depending on how much peppers you used, otherwise, you will end up with a burning 'jalepeno lips' that give you that nice 'punched in the face' look.

It takes on a lovely aqua-green color, I like it! It reminds me of Absinthe!

Okay, so once that is all strained and you have worked so very hard getting all the little chopped jalapeno bits out of the tequila bottle. Put it all back in and cap it for storage. I added a bit of sugar to cut the heat a bit and give it more body.

Ha! Here it is with some southwestern design accents! <3

last free weekend at the MCA

this is the last free weekend at the MCA. Their 40th anniversary ends November 14th. Soon those who don't want to pay $12.00 to get in will have to be content with browsing their bookstore. Though oft in my experience the bookstore is the highlight of the visit. :) I had already seen the main exhibits and the point of my visit was to check out the new show at the 12x12 space. The artist this month is Cody Hudson.

On March 17, 2007, the 4th anniversary of the start of the criminal invasion of Iraq, tens of thousands of people from around the country will descend on the Pentagon in a mass demonstration to demand: U.S. Out of Iraq Now! 2007 is the 40th anniversary of the historic 1967 anti-war march to the Pentagon during the Vietnam War. The message of the 1967 march was "From Protest to Resistance," and marked a turning point in the development of a countrywide mass movement.

In the coming days and weeks, thousands of organizations and individuals will begin mobilizing for the upcoming March on the Pentagon. Organizing committees and transportation centers are being established to bring people to the March on the Pentagon.

Musical innovator Björk releases her next studio album 'Volta' on May 7th 2007. 'Volta' is Bjork's sixth studio album and follows the release of 'Medulla' in 2004. Featuring ten brand new and original tracks 'Volta' is entirely written and produced by Bjork. In the role of producer Bjork has brought in various other musicians to work on her songs and 'Volta' features some of her most interesting collaborations so far with Antony Hegarty (Antony And The Johnsons) singing on two tracks, and Timbaland (Jay-Z, Missy Elliot etc) working with Bjork on beats that she created for three further songs. Other artists that feature on 'Volta' include electronic pioneer Mark Bell of LFO and two unique drummers – Chris Corsano (the improvisational drummer who has worked with Sonic Youth amongst others) and Brian Chippendale from Lightening Bolt. Bjork also brought in two acclaimed African artists for 'Volta' -- Toumani Diabate, the Malian kora player and Konono No1 the experimental band from The Congo who won a BBC World Music Award in 2006. She has also put together her own 10 piece female brass section of Icelandic musicians who play on three further tracks. Meanwhile Chinese pipa expert Min Xiao-Fen plays on one song.

vegan chocolate chip cookies

Ingredients (use vegan versions):

3/4 cup raw sugar
3/4 cup brown sugar
1 cup vegan margarine
1 teaspoon vanilla
approximately 1/3 cup applesauce (enough to equal 1 egg)
2 1/4 cups flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
1-12oz bag semi-sweet chocolate chips

Directions:

Heat oven to 370 Fahrenheit.

Beat sugars, margarine, vanilla, and applesauce together in a large bowl.

Stir in flour, baking soda, and salt. (Dough will be somewhat stiff).

Stir in chocolate chips.

Drop by rounded teaspoonfuls onto a cookie sheet. Bake for 10-15 minutes, or until light brown.

Cool.

The Easy Way!
1 unopened can sweetened condensed milk.
Full a pot with water enough to cover the can.
Boil for 3 hours.
It is very important that the water level is always kept above the can otherwise the can may explode. Check periodically to refill water and make sure the can is not expanding under pressure. If this happened take it off the heat immeadiately.

dulce de leche is great in coffee with a shot of brandy
or on toast.

finding out if vitaminwater really works. Whenever i take regular vitamins it turns my pee chartreuse. This never happens with vitaminwater, I brought the issue up to a friend of mine and she posited that it is perhaps because we metabolize the hydrolyzed version of vitamins better but the more i think about it the more it doesnt make sense at all because peeing it out means the body has at least metabolized some part of it. I have not found any conclusive evidence one way or another yet but I did find one article on how vitaminwater is making america fat. lofty claims but maybe contributing to the cause. It is pretty much sugar and water.

so new york was nice, i did go to apc, they dont post their hours on the door and it turned out to be right before they close. I got a pair of jeans they're nice but i need to wash them to see how much they shrink before i have them hemmed. herein lies the dilemma for they are raw denim and i am supposed to try and go as long as possible before washing. We went to the MET also and took a look at the vollard show. It was good but the met was hot and crowded full of inconsiderate tourists and that sucked. Also checked out UNIQLO crowded as fuck, gonna go back some other time. Lots of cashmere.

Carrot Ice-Cream

8 medium-sized carrots;
1 litre milk;
200 g sugar;
salt

Peel the carrots and cut into small pieces. Place them in a food processor or blender and process. Strain and mix the juice with the milk and sugar. Cook over a medium heat for 15 minutes or 5 minutes in the microwave, stirring from time to time. Then leave to cool. Add a pinch of salt, whisk lightly and chill in the freezer for 3 hours, stirring every hour.

super easy mock meat/seitan

1 cup "vital wheat gluten"
3/4 cups water or broth of choice.
whatever spices you like. garlic and soy sauce are good.

mix dry stuff together. okay now mix the wet stuff together. dont use an electric mixer, just squish it around with your hands really well. let it sit for a coupla minutes.
while it is sitting fill a big pot with water and spices and soy sauce and broth stuff if you want.
tear your glutinous ball up into pieces, or make shapes with them, like meatball shapes or something.
maker them smaller than you think you should because they expand in the cooking.
boil/simmer this for an hour or longer until your seitan gets all firm and chewy proteinous goodness.

experiment with the spice combo, you can use mock beef or chicken broth either as a spice or as a broth mixture to get more of a "real" flavor. sausage or meatball spices work well. my favorite combo though is soy sauce/miso broth with paprika, diced garlic and chili powder in the gluten.

"MR. ONOGI: I was in the second year of junior high school and was mobilized work with my classmates at the Eba Plant, Mitsubishi shipbuilding. On the day when A-bomb was dropped, I happened to be taking the day off and I was staying at home. I was reading lying on the floor with a friend of mine. Under the eaves I saw blue flash of light just like a spark made by a train or some short circuit. Next, a steamlike blast came.
INTERVIEWER: From which direction?
ANSWER: Well, I'm not sure, anyway, when the blast came, my friend and I were blown into another room. I was unconscious for a while, and when I came to, I found myself in the dark. Thinking my house was directly hit by a bomb, I removed red soil and roof tiles covering me by hand and for the first time I saw the sky. I managed to go out to open space and I looked around wondering what my family were doing. I found that all the houses around there had collapsed for as far as I could see.
INTERVIEWER: All the houses?
ANSWER: Yes, well, I couldn't see anyone around me but I heard somebody shouting ``Help! Help!`` from somewhere. The cries were actually from underground as I was walking on. Since no choice were available, I'd just dug out red soil and roof tiles by hand to help my family; my mother, my three sisters and a child of one of my sisters. Then, I looked next door and I saw the father of neighboring family standing almost naked. His skin was peeling off all over his body and was hanging from finger tips. I talked to him but he was too exhausted to give me a reply. Then he cried. He was looking for his family desperately. The person in this picture was a neighbor of us. I think the family's name was the Matsumotos. When we were escaping from the edge of the bridge, we found this small girl crying and she asked us to help her mother. Just beside the girl, her mother was trapped by a fallen beam on top of the lower half of her body. Together with neighbors, we tried hard to remove the beam, but it was impossible without any tools. Finally a fire broke out endangering us. So we had no choice but to leave her. She was conscious and we deeply bowed to her with clasped hands to apologize to her and then we left. About one hour later, it started raining heavily. There were large drops of black rain. I was wearing a short sleeve shirt and shorts and it was freezing. Everybody was shivering. We warmed ourselves up around the burning fire in the middle of the summer.

INTERVIEWER: You mean the fire did not extinguish by the rain?

ANSWER: That's right. The fire didn't subside it at all. What impressed my very strongly was a 5 or 6 year-old-boy with his right leg cut at the thigh. He was hopping on his left foot to cross over the bridge. I can still record this scene very clearly. The water of the river we looking at now is very clean and clear, but on the day of bombing, all the houses along this river were blown by the blast with their pillars, beams and pieces of furniture blown into the river or hanging off the bridges. The river was also filled with dead people blown by the blast and with survivors who came here to seek water. Anyway I could not see the surface of the water at all. Many injured people with peeled skin were crying out for help. Obviously they were looking at us and we could hardly turn our eyes toward the river.

INTERVIEWER: Wasn't it possible to help them?

ANSWER: No, there were too many people. We took care of the people around us by using the clothes of dead people as bandages, especially for those who were terribly wounded. By that time we somehow became insensible all those awful things. After a while, the fire reached the river bank and we decided to leave the river. We crossed over this railway bridge and escaped in the direction along the railway. The houses on both sides of the railroad were burning and railway was the hollow in the fire. I thought I was going to die here. It was such an awful experience. You know for about 10 years after bombing I always felt paralyzed we never saw the sparks made by trains or lightning. Also even at home, I could not sit beside the windows because I had seen so many people badly wounded by pieces of glass. So I always sat with the wall behind me for about 10 years. It was some sort of instinct to self-preservation.
